Scientists create DNA tracking tags, might soon be used to track protesters as well as animals
2013-09-30 17:22:57| Extremetech
Researchers at the University of Aveiro in Portugal are developing DNA barcode tags that can be harmlessly applied to a wide variety of products, even foods or liquids. Each tag is a unique combination of DNA base pairs that attach to most surfaces, and can later be collected, amplified, and sequenced, to reveal the history of the object they mark.
Scientists Call for Overhaul of IPCC

InsideClimate: When a United Nations panel of experts released a report last week [3] affirming that man-made climate change is a scientific certainty, skeptics of global warming were noisily trying to discredit the panel [4]. In the process, they drowned out the critiques of a far different group. A broad array of leading climate scientists and policy specialists were also criticizing the panel for the exact opposite reason: They believe the main conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [5]...

Scientists: IPCC Report Should Serve as 'Wake-Up Call'
2013-09-28 22:26:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ABC: The new U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report should serve as a "wake-up call" to governments and society about the role of humans in global warming, scientists say. "It is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century," the IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report, which was published Friday, found. "This report confirms with even more certainty than in the past -- that it is extremely likely that the changes in our...

Environmental News Network: Scientists specializing in forest ecosystems and climate change called on President Obama today to protect public forests from logging and development in efforts to forestall global warming and compliment the presidents recent proposal for tighter restrictions on coal-fired power plants. New forest inventories show that the nation's forests absorb nearly one-quarter of our greenhouse gas pollutants if left undisturbed. In contrast, logging releases most of the carbon stored as carbon dioxide,...

What leading scientists want you to know about today's frightening climate report
2013-09-28 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Atlantic: The polar icecaps are melting faster than we thought they would; seas are rising faster than we thought they would; extreme weather events are increasing. Have a nice day! Thats a less than scientifically rigorous summary of the findings of the Fifth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report released this morning in Stockholm. Appearing exhausted after a nearly two sleepless days fine-tuning the language of the report, co-chair Thomas Stocker called climate change the greatest...
