Scientists settle on low end of carbon budget spectrum

2016-02-24 10:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Home: Countries agreed last year to limit global warming to 2C this century and "pursue efforts" to hold it to 1.5C to avoid dangerous climate change. Scientists have come up with a range of estimates for the cap on greenhouse gas pollution needed to have a likely chance of avoiding that threshold. It`s known as the "carbon budget". A review of the evidence on Wednesday published in journal Nature Climate Change recommended dismissing the more generous allowances. From 2015 onwards, there is only...

Aussie scientists confident of stopping Zika virus

Leader Call: The Zika virus is tricky to track. For Rochon, one of the lessons of West Nile virus, which still causes hundreds of cases in humans each year in Canada, is to check if viruses can be transmitted as Hunter is now doing. In addition to surveying mosquitoes and viruses in the field, the biologists are developing mathematical models to discover how disease transmission by Aedes aegypti responds to temperature, important for predicting future changes in virus transmission under climate change,...

Seas are now rising faster than they have in 2,800 years, scientists say

2016-02-23 10:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Washington Post: A group of scientists says it has now reconstructed the history of the planets sea levels arcing back over some 3,000 years -- leading it to conclude that the rate of increase experienced in the 20th century was extremely likely to have been faster than during nearly the entire period. We can say with 95 percent probability that the 20th-century rise was faster than any of the previous 27 centuries, said Bob Kopp, a climate scientist at Rutgers University who led the research with nine colleagues...
