Trans-Tasman competition to heat up as Emirates offers world's longest flight

Emirates will launch the first non-stop flights between Auckland and Dubai from March 2, in a move that will give it a brief crown as the longest flight in the world and effectively increase the capacity available for bookings on its trans-Tasman joint venture with Qantas. Emirates will maintain its current trans-Tasman schedule of three A380 and one Boeing 777-300ER flights a day, despite adding five weekly non-stop services between Auckland and Dubai on a 777-200LR.

Trans-Tasman competition heats up as foreign airlines enter market

Air New Zealand, which has a trans-Tasman alliance with Virgin Australia, is the largest player in the overall market. A fresh battle is brewing on the hotly contested trans-Tasman route as foreign carriers AirAsia X, Singapore Airlines and Philippines Airlines enter a crowded market at a time when local airlines have also been expanding capacity.

Weak dollar fails to dent demand for trans-Tasman flights, Air New Zealand CEO says

The number of Australians travelling to New Zealand over the last year had increased about 6 per cent despite the currency closing in on parity in recent months. Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon says demand for flights across the Tasman remains strong despite a weak Australian dollar making New Zealand a more expensive holiday destination.

Spark, Vodafone, Telstra to build trans-Tasman subsea cable

(Telecompaper) Spark New Zealand, Vodafone and Telstra has confirmed they are planning to build a new 2,300km submarine cable between New Zealand and Australia. The TGA Cable deployment will start in early 2015. Spark, Vodafone and Telstra plan to invest around USD 70 million on the new Tasman Global Access (TGA) Cable. Alcatel-Lucent has been selected as the cable laying contractor after a tender process, and the TGA Cable is expected to be built and start providing data traffic by mid-2016.

Norgate to lead transtasman accountant merger

The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants has brought former Fonterra chief executive Craig Norgate on board to oversee a major merger between the organisation and its Aussie counterpart, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia.
