A coal ash cleanup law has stretched staff members at North Carolina's environmental regulation agency "to the absolute breaking point" as they analyze voluminous data to meet deadlines, a top agency official told lawmakers Wednesday. Tom Reeder, assistant secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality, made the remarks as part of a status report on storage sites for the residue created when power plants burn coal.

A Faulkner County circuit judge mandated parties involved in lawsuits against ExxonMobil groups go through mediation in hopes to resolve outstanding issues. Circuit Judge Charles "Ed" Clawson set deadlines for mediation in six outstanding cases against the gas giant in a pretrial hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 30. The lawsuits stem from an incident in March 2013 where a 22-foot seam in the Pegasus pipeline ruptured and spilled roughly 3,190 barrels of oil near Mayflower and Lake Conway, causing 22 homes to be evacuated.
