KPCC: Saving water doesn't always mean saving money in parched California. Millions of Californians expecting relief on their water bills for taking conservation measures instead are finding higher rates and drought surcharges. Water departments are increasing rates and adding fees because they're losing money as their customers conserve. They say they still have to pay for fixed costs including repairing pipelines, customer service and enforcing water restrictions -- and those costs aren't decreasing....

PG&E and California electricity customers face sweeping changes in bills

A proposal to change the way consumers are charged for electricity in California could jolt the pocketbooks of poor customers and others who use less electricity. The state Public Utilities Commission on Friday is scheduled to vote on a massive restructuring of electricity rates that is expected to boost monthly bills at least $10 a month for 35 percent of residential electricity customers in California, including those served by San Francisco-based PG&E.

FBI looks into fiber-optic vandalism in Northern California

The FBI is working with police to catch vandals behind nearly a dozen fiber-optic cable cuts in Northern California in the past year. The latest snips occurred Tuesday, when someone sliced at least three fiber-optic cables in an underground vault in Alameda County east of San Francisco.

San Francisco Chronicle: Despite Californias many efforts to fight global warming, the states greenhouse gas emissions rose in 2012, as a nuclear power plant shut down and the drought hit hydroelectric dams hard. But the increase, it turns out, didnt last. Data released by the state on Tuesday show that Californias emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases started falling again in 2013. The drop wasnt much, just 0.3 percent. The states economy still pumped almost 460 million metric tons of greenhouse...
