TheInternational Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that is responsible for issues that concerninformation and communication technologies, has established the overall roadmap for the development of 5G mobile and defined the term it will apply to it as “IMT-2020”.With the finalization of its work on the “Vision” for 5G systems at a meeting of ITU-R Working Party 5D in San Diego, California, ITU has now defined the overall goals, process and timeline for the development of 5G mobile systems. This process is now well underway within ITU, in close collaboration with governments and the global mobile industry.

(Telecompaper) The ITU has established the overall roadmap for the development of 5G mobile and defined the term it will apply to it as "IMT-2020". With the finalization of its work at a meeting of the ITU-R Working Party 5D in San Diego, the ITU has now defined the overall goals, process and timeline for the development of 5G mobile systems. The meeting agreed that the work should be conducted under the name of IMT-2020, as an extension of the ITU's existing family of global standards for International Mobile Telecommunication systems (IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced) which serve as the basis for 3G and 4G mobile systems. The next step is to establish detailed technical performance requirements for the radio systems to support 5G, taking into account the needs of a wide portfolio of future scenarios and use cases, and then to specify the evaluation criteria for assessment of candidate radio interface technologies to join the IMT-2020 family. These new systems are expected set to become available in 2020. The ITU-R Radiocommunication Assembly, which will meet in October, is expected to formally adopt the term "IMT-2020".

ITU study group to develop IoT standards for smart cities
2015-06-10 14:38:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The ITU has established a new ITU-T Study Group to address the standardisation requirements of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, with an initial focus on IoT applications in smart cities. The new group, titled "ITU-T Study Group 20: IoT and its applications, including smart cities and communities," will be responsible for international standards to enable the coordinated development of IoT technologies, including machine-to-machine communications and ubiquitous sensor networks. The group will develop IoT standards that address urban-development challenges. A key part of the study will be the standardization of end-to-end architectures for IoT and mechanisms for the interoperability of IoT applications and datasets employed by various vertically oriented industry sectors. The deployment of IoT technologies is expected to connect an estimated 50 billion devices to the network by year 2020, the ITU said.
