Arctic thawing could cost the world $60tn, scientists say

2013-07-24 13:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BusinessGreen: Rapid thawing of the Arctic could trigger a catastrophic "economic timebomb" which would cost trillions of dollars and undermine the global financial system, say a group of economists and polar scientists. Governments and industry have expected the widespread warming of the Arctic region in the past 20 years to be an economic boon, allowing the exploitation of new gas and oilfields and enabling shipping to travel faster between Europe and Asia. But the release of a single giant "pulse" of methane...

Climate change slowdown is due to warming of deep oceans, say scientists

2013-07-22 18:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: A recent slowdown in the upward march of global temperatures is likely to be the result of the slow warming of the deep oceans, British scientists said on Monday. Oceans are some of the Earth's biggest absorbers of heat, which can be seen in effects such as sea level rises, caused by the expansion of large bodies of water as they warm. The absorption goes on over long periods, as heat from the surface is gradually circulated to the lower reaches of the seas. Temperatures around the world have...

Natural Barriers Protect Our Coasts Best, Say Researchers

2013-07-20 16:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate News Network: The best thing to protect your property from the sea is a sand dune -- or a mangrove swamp, or a coral reef, kelp forest or sea grass meadow. Nature, which has been doing the job for three billion years, has had time to work out the surest and most enduring sea defenses, according to U.S. researchers. Katie Arkema of the Natural Capital Project at Stanford University in California and colleagues found that the conservation of natural habitat could reduce by half the people and property at risk...

New vulnerability found in Java 7 opens door to 10-year-old attack, researchers say

2013-07-18 22:33:17| InfoWorld: Top News

Security researchers from Polish vulnerability research firm Security Explorations claim to have identified a new vulnerability in Java 7 that could allow attackers to bypass the software's security sandbox and execute arbitrary code on the underlying system. The vulnerability was reported Thursday to Oracle along with proof-of-concept exploit code, said Adam Gowdiak, the CEO and founder of Security Explorations, in a message to the Full Disclosure mailing list.
