(Telecompaper) MTN Nigeria has announced that it has reached an agreement with the government of Nigeria over its fine for failing to cut off unregistered SIMs. The operator said it has agreed to pay a total cash amount of NGN 330 billion over three years, which is the equivalent of USD 1.671 billion at the official exchange rate and USD902 million at the Lagos Parallel Market Rate. It will pay this to the national government in full and final settlement of the matter.

(Telecompaper) MTN Group executive chairman Phuthuma Nhleko is continuing in his role past the 09 May expiry of his initial contract, as he is still working on the dual tasks of recruiting a new chief executive officer and resolving a record fine in Nigeria, Bloomberg reported. MTN spokesman Chris Maroleng told the news agency that the board had given Nhleko a mandate and that he would continue as executive chairman until this mandate has been fulfilled.
