MTN Nigeria denies improper repatriation of funds but advises share trading caution

(Telecompaper) MTN Nigeria has issued a trading caution to shareholders but denied any improper repatriation of funds, after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) ordered the return of USD 8.1 billion it alleges the operator illegally moved out of the country. MTN said it received a letter on 29 August from CBN, alleging that Certificates of Capital Importation (CCIs) issued in respect of the conversion of shareholders loans in MTN Nigeria to preference shares in 2007, had been improperly issued.

MTN Group denies any plans to sell shares in Jumia in short term

(Telecompaper) MTN Group is considering a sale of shares in African online retailer Jumia and values the company at as much as USD 1 billion, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. An MTN spokeswoman said the operator currently has no plans to dispose of its investment in Jumia in the short term. Bloomberg cited its anonymous sources as saying MTN was considering an initial public offering of the e-commerce business on the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange.

MTN Group H1 revenue rises 10% to ZAR 506 bln

(Telecompaper) MTN Group revenue increased by 9.7 percent to ZAR 505.67 billion in the first six months to 30 June from ZAR 432.28 billion in the same period in 2017. Service revenue increased by 10.2 percent, supported by growth in MTN Nigeria (up 17.0%), MTN Ghana (up 27.9%), MTN South Africa (up 2.9%) and MTN Uganda (up 8.8%). MTN Cameroon and MTN Ivory Coast reported 7.0 percent and 6.6 percent declines in service revenue respectively. Net profit increased to ZAR 73.39 billion from ZAR 40.64 billion in 2017.

MTN sells Cyprus unit to Monaco Telecom for EUR 260 mln

(Telecompaper) MTN Group has agreed to sell its Cyprus unit to Monaco Telecom for about EUR 260 million. MTN Cyprus is MTN's only operating business in the EU, and was acquired as part of MTN Group's acquisition of telecoms holding company Investcom in 2006. It falls outside the group's core footprint of Africa and the Middle East.
