AMD breaks from Windows exclusivity, adopts Android and Chrome OS

After years of Windows OS exclusivity, Advanced Micro Devices is opening the door to design chips to run Google's Android and Chrome OS in PCs and tablets. AMD is expanding OS options as it designs chips based on x86 and ARM architecture, which run multiple OSes, said Lisa Su, senior vice president and general manager of global business units at AMD, in an interview at the Computex trade show in Taiwan.

AMD bridges road to ARM with new low-power x86 server chips

Advanced Micro Devices had no plans to release low-power x86 server chips until the release of its ARM-based servers in 2014, but sagging server fortunes have changed the company's direction. The company is introducing two low-power quad-core Opteron server chips called X2150 and X1150, which draw up to 11 watts of power and are targeted at microservers. The chips are based on the Jaguar core, which is already in PC processors and chips to be used in the Xbox and PlayStation 4 game consoles.

AMD's new low-power Kabini APU is making a play for cloud computing and server workloads as well. The new Kyoto Opteron will be the first server APU AMD has ever built, and is aimed at low-power cloud workloads that could benefit from OpenCL acceleration.

AMD Stakes Out Mobile Territory With New Low-Power Chips

Perennial Intel competitor AMD on Thursday launched three additions to its 2013 A-Series and E-series mobile accelerated processing unit family. They include the Elite Mobility APU, previously code-named "Temash," and the Mainstream APU, formerly code-named "Kabini."Both are system on a chip solutions based on AMD's "Jaguar" microarchitecture for low-power processors.
