Legislators looking into the controversial settlement between the state and Exxon Mobil said their weeks-long quest for more information on the deal has confirmed their initial reaction and they are confident that weeks of digging through boxes of documents has built a strong case to make for a judge to reject the agreement. On Wednesday, two days before the deadline to submit public comments to the judge considering the $225 million settlement, the Assembly Judiciary Committee gathered in Bayonne, one of the two towns damaged by decades of contamination by the oil company.

US legislators introduce student privacy bill

(Telecompaper) US legislators have introduced a bill in Congress aimed at strengthening the digital privacy of students, the New York Times reported. Entitled the Student Digital Privacy and Parental Rights Act of 2015, the bill would prohibit operators of websites, apps and other online services from knowingly selling students' personal information to third parties, for kindergartners through 12th graders. The act would also forbid the use or disclosure of their personal information for tailored advertising and for the creation of personal profiles, unless it is for a school-related purpose. The bill would give parents access to information held about their children and allow them to correct or delete any information about their children, as well as to download any material their children have created.

NY legislators pass bill to protect farmers from biotech industry lawsuits

On February 11, the New York State Assembly passed a bill that would protect farmers from being sued by biotechnology companies in the case of genetically engineered crops accidentally growing in their fields. In contrast with conventionally bred crops, GE crops are typically held under a patent which prohibits anyone from planting them without the express permission of the patent-holding company.

Legislators Open To Expanding Gambling

Several key legislators who oversee gambling in Connecticut said they are open to expanding gambling, with one saying while touring Mohegan Sun on Monday that there could be three new venues. "If we keep on letting our border states erode this base, ultimately we're going to lose jobs, ultimately we're going to lose revenue," said Sen. Tim Larson, D-East Hartford, who oversees gambling as co-chairman of the legislature's public safety and security committee.
