Sunday, December 21, 2014 Kabul (BNA) PUL-E-KHUMRI: Baghlan sugar factory has started producing sugar after collecting program of sugar beet ended in the province. Head of the factory Ghulam Sakhi told BNA, 4718 tons beet have been collected from 784 hectare agricultural fields and taken to Baghlan sugar factory for producing sugar, adding by ending collecting program of sugar beet the factory has started producing sugar and it is determined 500 tons sugar will be produced. Head of the factory considered that key and basic problem in reduction of sugar beet fields was the preference of farmers in cultivation of onions and tomatoes in their fields. Besides, transport facilitation of other products as watermelon and melon through Salang valley to Kabul has caused that farmers had preferred to grow melons on their fields rather than beet. Head of factory said that the only solution of the current problems was to set up cooperatives for those farmers growing sugar beet on their fields. It is worth mentioning that Baghlan sugar factory is the only factory producing sugar in Afghanistan. The factory produced up to 9000 tons sugar in the past, while it is predicted to produce now 500 tons sugar.
