Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support within the Science and Robotic Exploration Directorate DSRE. Aurora currently has a team of 26 engineers and scientists at ESAC. Overview BepiColombo is a joint ESAJAXA mission to Mercury. The mission comprises two spacecraft, ESAs Mercury Planetary Orbiter MPO and JAXAs Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter MMO. The two spacecraft will be launched in 2017 with arrival at Mercury in early 2024. The activities of the MPO Science Ground Segment SGS include Science Operations Planning of the MPO payload, science data processing and data distribution to the instrument teams, quick look data analysis of science data and archiving of data in the BepiColombo science archive. The MPO SGS has interfaces with the Operational Ground Segment OGS at ESOC, the MMO JAXA Sagamihara Space Operations Centre SSOC, the MPO Instrument Teams and the Scientific Community. The SGS is based at the European Space Astronomy Centre ESAC in Villanueva de la Caada, Madrid, Spain. This service covers activities to be carried out by an Operations EngineerScientist in the area of Systems and Science Operations analysis, design and development. This role requires that deep knowledge of spacecraft and instrument functionalities and performances, as well as science operations methods and processes, is acquired and maintained throughout the duration of the service. This knowledge shall be transferred to the SGS design and development process to ensure that all requirements and the instrument operational needs and constraints are properly accounted for in the SGS definition and system design. Tasks The incumbent shall perform the following tasks Operations Analysis Define, plan and coordinate analyses of instrument and spacecraft operations during NECP, cruise, MOI, nominal and extended orbital missions in the context of the SGS Science Planning System development, testing and operations. Study, prototype and develop asneeded Science Operations Analysis SOA environments, workflows and tools in support of the above analyses. Develop procedures for the usage of SOA environments, workflows and tools, the execution of the SOA related tasks and relevant automation whenever applicable. Analyse available operations modelling tools in the context of the above workflows and develop mechanisms to provide required, unavailable, functionality. Interface with DTEC concerning the update of heritage science operations tools and development of new capabilities, including science operations planning. Coordinate the execution of the Science Operations Analysis activities throughout the SGS. Conduct Operational Constraint Analysis at instrument and system level. Iterate on operations scenarios with the PI teams, ESA Project and OGS, and industry during Science Working Team SWT, Science Operations Working Group SOWG, and other relevant meetings. Develop, with PI teams, strategies for science operations optimization including maximization of datareturn through available SSMM mechanisms. Produce Operations and Constraint Analysis Reports on studied scenarios. Provide support to the Project Scientist, as required, including but not limited to shortterm analyses of specific mission science operations scenarios. Coordinate, with the Project Scientist, the preparation of the mission Science Activity Plan SAP, assisting in the automation of the process where possiblenecessary. Coordinate, with the Project Scientist and SWT the compilation of a Science Traceability Matrix TMX and its interface to an Observations Catalogue. Organise and maintain all information concerning instrument operations deemed necessary for future knowledge preservation. Support the QPM SOWG DHAWG etc. meetings, as required System Development Contribute to the design, specification and prototyping of an Observations Catalogue, a Science Planning System and the interfaces of these components to the rest of the SGS system work to be done with Uplink Systems Engineer. Contribute to the SGS preparation activities, such as definition of operations plans procedures and preparation of training activities Contribute to overall SGS requirement specification and design, by assisting in the definition of user requirements for the SGS and reviewingassessing completeness and adequacy of System being designed and implemented. Cooperate with other projects on operational matters e.g. promote the exchange of information with missions that have various similarities with BepiColombo e.g. Rosetta, EXOMARS, JUICE, SOLO Interface with the CrossMission Support Office for the development and testing of SPICE kernels e.g. Instrument specific, orbit attitude as required Contribute to the definition and specification of the Quick Look Analysis requirements and processes and follow implementation of Instrument Data Processing pipelines by ITs. Maintain close interactions with the DHA community both in and outside of ESA, e.g. PDS, USGS, OpenPlanetary, etc. AIV Support Provide support to the instrument teams in the preparation of AIV test scenarios and scripts, and execution of AIV activities and calibration campaigns. Provide advanced and onsite support to ESA Project and industry in the coordination, preparation and execution of AIV activities at instrument level. Analyse and model AIV system and instrument scenarios in the context of resource usage. Research In order to ensure good insight into the relevant area and for proximity to the PIinstrument teams and the larger science community, scientific andor technology research activities in relevant areas are encouraged. Specific qualification requirements University degree preferably Ph.D. in a scientific or technical subject. Relevant professional experience of at least 5 years. In particular, possess the following experience, knowledge and proficiency in Demonstrable experience in the fields of planetary science instrument operations analysis, planning and execution Demonstrable prototypingdevelopment experience in the area of operations analysis environments and tools Demonstrable knowledge of Science Operations for planetary missions at ESA, and the associated tools and processes Experience of system and software design and specification Knowledge of astronomicalplanetary instrumentation, preferably related to Mercury. Experience in development and execution of AIV test specifications and command scenarios at instrumentlevel Proven experience in managing multiple interfaces with the Scientific Community and Industry Proven ability to compile and reduce complex analyses into succinct reports and presentations Experience of data processing of spacebased data Knowledge of space geometry concepts and use of other ancillary information including experience with the SPICE ancillary information system Knowledge of operations processes used on previous Mercury missions, e.g. NASA MESSENGER SciBox, ACTREACT Programming experience in several languages Python, CC, Java, Fortran, Perl Demonstrable experience in programming and administration of Windows, UNIX and MacOS Operating Systems. In addition Experience interacting with the science community would be an advantage. Applicants must be willing to render the service in a team environment. Applicants must be willing to travel. Good interpersonal and communication skills are an advantage. Applicants must be comfortable in an international working environment Be fluent in written and spoken English one of the official languages of ESA. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in Spain without the need to obtain a work visa. Only European Union citizens can be employed by Aurora in Spain. Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. Prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident. Location The work will be performed at the ESAC, the European Space Astronomy Centre, at Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain. Contract You will be registered for both social security and tax in Spain. The standard working hours are 40 per week. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 30 annual days holiday. In addition to public health services Aurora provides private medical insurance in Spain. Training to improve efficiency and provide strength for future career are of course included.
