This position, in a scientific organisation based near Munich in Germany, calls for experience of development of numerical scientific applications in C and the handling of scientific data. The main working language is English. The role is centred on a suite of web applications used by astronomers as tools for observation proposal preparations. The work involves maintenance and development of applications within an existing CGI clientserver web application framework, in which the backend model and numerical calculation engine is implemented in C and the frontend mostly based on static HTML templates and some JavaScript. The work will also include refurbishment and enhancements in particular in the C backend framework, towards establishing a dynamic interface to a new, interactive singlepage web application frontend. The key experience and attributes sought are Development of numerical scientific applications in C and handling of scientific data Familiarity with UnixLinux environments Experience with web technologies at least basic HTML and JavaScript Experience of the complete software lifecycle Knowledge of software engineering practices and development tools, including version control, development environments and debuggers Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous Observational astronomy, interferometry and astronomical instrumentation Web technologies, in particular HTML, CSS, JavaScript and related toolkits Some knowledge of scripting languages and Python Code validation and unitregression testing Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent. Fluency in English is essential. This is a freelance contract assignment with an initial period of 3 years starting in July 2015 with an option to extend for a further two years.
