Summary This is an opportunity for an experienced Climate Application Scientist with a background in atmospheric science, emissions and greenhouse gases to work onsite at ECSAT for Telespazio VEGA UK. Objective The objective is to give expert support to the ESA Climate Office for its activities developing the use of EO in monitoring atmospheric greenhouse gases GHGs and associated trace gas species, their inversion to emission fluxes, and use of this information by scientific, industrial and policy making users. Responsibilities Duties The successful candidate will have the opportunity to Provide expert analysis of the current state of the art in climate science, with a focus on atmospheric science. Liaise with user communities, partly being unfamiliar with the potential of Earth Observation EO, identifying opportunities for new RD activities, supporting the definition of new research and application development and demonstration projects, and communicating the results to the wider scientific, public and policy making audiences. Contributing to the overall response of the ESA Climate Office to the needs of ESAs Member States in maximising the benefits of EO for responding to the requirements of the UNFCCC Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Supporting the dialogue with specialised user communities, analysing their needs for satellitebased observations of the climate system, and assessing their feedback on available EObased information, Deriving technical specifications for EO based data products and services responding to user needs, based on Essential Climate Variables, chiefly based on ESA EO Missions, with specific regard to longterm stability, consistency, completeness, availability, errorcharacterisation, reducing uncertainties, and compatibility with climate observations from other space and nonspace sources, Assisting the ESA Climate Office staff in establishing, running and evaluating industrial contracts RD projects and other EO exploitation activities to respond to the needs for EObased information for use in climate research and climate services, including for reanalysis, modelling, attribution, projection, prediction, trends assessment, and data assimilation, Ensuring the results of such developments are tested and verified with the corresponding climate user communities in the context of national and international climate policy, Cooperating with internal and external partner organisations to transfer capabilities developed under a research and demonstration context into an operational framework, Maintaining links and ensuring coherence with relevant activities of Member States and international partner organisations e.g., GCOS, WCRP, GEO, European Commission, ECMWF, Eumetsat, UNFCCC, IPCC, WMO, Future Earth , SCO etc, Contributing to the Agencys public communications on EO. Qualifications Experience University PhD or MSc or related qualification in Engineering, physics or Earth science, or any other appropriate scientific field. Related remote sensing applications development andor research Essential Skills Professional experience on product definition, calibration, validation, algorithm development, quality assessment and exploitation of Earth Observation data, particularly ESA missions, Relevant scientific exploitation activities either internationally or in ESA Member States and an established profile with research communities working in atmospheric science and its relation to climate would be an advantage. Familiarity with the national and international climate policy environment, e.g. ESA Member States national climate adaptation plans, UNFCCC Paris Agreement, IPCC etc would be an asset Qualities Capable of working effectively in a team with minimum supervision and have excellent communication and presentation skills. Strong English language skills A proactive and flexible attitude will be required Promoting cooperation and teamworking, problem solving
