Can you apply your knowledge of radiative transfer models to lead specific scientific developments for the generation and validation of climate data records, focusing on the processing of Level 1 physical data to Level 2 geophysical products? EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment, pulling together the resources of 30 Member States. We observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces from Space using a system of satellites, 365 days a year, offering images and data to provide insights into weather situations, environmental hazards and climate change. Our work helps users worldwide to monitor changes in these to protect lives, lifestyles and properties. Developing the next generation of satellites, we look to shape our future. We are recruiting for a Product Expert to work within the Climate Services Division, focusing on the processing of Level 1 data to produce Level 2 products. This person will lead specific scientific developments for the generation and validation of climate data records. Specific contributions will be to the assessment of algorithms for the extraction of atmospheric and oceanic variables, and the validation of the produced thematic climate data records in cooperation with the climate community including the estimation of uncertainties. To be successful in this role you will need to contribute to the quality evaluation of the produced climate data records including the development of the appropriate diagnostic tools such as automatic comparisons to models, and variability and trend estimators etc. We expect the Climate Product Expert to be able to lead small teams of scientists, supporting their developments and reporting on progress, achievements, issues and plans. The role will involve interagency and team working across EUMETSAT and our network of Satellite Applications Facilities SAFs so we are looking for someone with good interpersonal and communication skills. Alongside a university degree in Meteorology, Remote Sensing or another relevant discipline you will need to demonstrate in depth knowledge and experience in the use of radioactive transfer models in the infrared, andor microwave spectral ranges. You will also have experience in inversion methods for the retrieval of geophysical parameters from physical parameters extracted from observations of meteorological satellites and the ability to undertake programming using CC andor Fortran 95 as well as scripting languages such as Perl, Python and Shell. Experience in the management of scientific projects and small teams would be an advantage. The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.
