(Telecompaper) US cable operator Comcast has installed what it claims to be the world's first Docsis 3.1 modem on a customer-facing network. The modem was installed at a customer's home in the Philadelphia area, with Comcast saying that the technology has the potential to support gigabit speed broadband over existing hybrid fibre coaxial networks. The company added that it will continue testing the technology over the coming months in Pennsylvania, Northern California and Atlanta, Georgia, before rolling out Docsis 3.1-powered services in several parts of the country by the end of 2016.
