Comcast grows to more broadband than TV subscribers

(Telecompaper) Comcast added 31,000 new customers at its cable activities in the second quarter, for a total 27.265 million at the end of June. The company still lost 69,000 TV subscribers - its best Q2 result in nine years - for a total 22.306 million at the end of June. Broadband subscribers surpassed TV customers for the first time in the quarter, increasing by 180,000 compared to March to a total 22.548 million. The strong demand for broadband services, including ever higher speeds, as well as rate hikes across the board helped the company grow its quarterly revenues from cable by 6.3 percent year-on-year to USD 11.7 billion. Internet revenues were up 10.0 percent from a year ago to USD 3.1 billion, and business services also grew by 20.4 percent to USD 1.2 billion. Telephony was the one area to show lower revenues, down 2.1 percent, while the fixed-line customer base was still up by 49,000 on a sequential basis to 11.319 million. Capital expenditure at the cable activities rose 12.3 percent from a year earlier to USD 1.7 billion, and operating cash flow was up 5.1 percent to USD 4.8 billion. Comcast's total revenues, including NBCUniversal, rose 11.3 percent to USD 18.7 billion, and earnings per share were up 10.5 percent to USD 0.84.
