To support ESA in system administration activities for those computer systems used for science operations and research activities. These computers are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Sun Solaris, Macintoshes, PC for Office Automation activities. Objective Support Group provided computer support to all science operations centers and science ground segments located at ESAC, either in development or in operational phase. The environment also includes Disk Storage infrastructure, Virtual infrastructure as well as GRID and Cloud computing infrastructures. Systems can be physical machines or provided through virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. The support specifically excludes ESA corporate informatics infrastructure services office automation, network, terminal servers, Lotus Notes, LAN and communications, which are provided and subject to separate Service Level Agreements SLA. The SREO computer environment at ESAC contains a number of computers dedicated to science operations and archive activities. These are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Sun Solaris, Macintoshes, PC for Office Automation activities and some OpenVMS machines. Systems can be physical machines or provided through the department virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. The Computer Support Group is also maintaining the ESAC GRID and Cloud computing environments, used for project data processing, daily science analysis tasks by user. The external GRID computing environment is also connected to the European EGI infrastructure Responsibilities Duties In close cooperation with the CSG computer system engineers and following the established procedures, the Computer Operators are expected to provide support in the following areas Operating the required project systems according to System Operations and System User manuals, including execution of the relevant system operations procedures, monitoring the function and the performance of the different machines, including regular checkouts and maintenance of activity and event logs for all required systems Handling of all required systems backups and restores Issuing the following up the corresponding hardware and software problem reports, including opening hardware incidents calls and following the call history as well as assisting technicians when on site Automation of manual repetitive activities, including development of procedures and scripts that could simplify various commands which are performed manually Support the CSG Computer System Engineers with respect to their CSG related activities First line Users support mainly scientists and engineers Qualifications Experience Specific knowledge is required in the following areas SUN Solaris system management Linux RedHat system management PC Windows system management Macintosh system management Backup management systems Storage SANNAS technologies Virtualization technologies Scientific user computer support Technical degree or equivalent in computer science or related fields Essential Skills The service support requires working under a shift pattern together with another three persons, which provides the following onsite support at ESAC Coverage of 2 computer operators from 0900 to 2130 on ESAC normal working days MondayFriday Coverage of 1 computer operator from 0900 to 2130 on weekends and ESAC public holidays. It is assumed that this proposed shift work pattern based on a 4 weeks cycle can be covered by 4 persons. The key person should have a working knowledge of English, both in speaking and in writing.
