Moreover, we actively manage your professional development, training and career progression. For the location in Darmstadt, Germany we are looking for an EARS System Engineer fm at EUMETSAT. Aufgaben Tasks The purpose of the EUMETSAT Advanced Retransmission Service EARS is to provide polar satellite data from the EUMETSAT Metop and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA satellites with a timeliness suited to the needs of European operational short range regional numerical weather prediction models. The geographical coverage of EARS is primarily over datasparse sea areas around Europe. EARS comprises six separate polar satellite instrument data services these are the existing EARSATOVS, EARSAVHRR, Pilot EARSASCAT and the EARSIASI services and the EARSNWC and EARSNPP services currently under preparation. Each of the EARS services retransmits observations from an instrument or an instrument group. Following the successful introduction and operation of the EARS services based on the NOAA POESS and Metop spacecraft, the EUMETSAT Council in 2010 decided to extend EARS with services based on the new generation of NOAA polar orbiting satellites called Suomi NPP and JPSS1. Work is progressing to establish the reception, processing and dissemination of the Suomi NPP data and represents a challenging step up in technology and data rates compared to the established EARS services. The Key Person shall provide support to the System Engineering and Projects Division SEP within the Technical and Scientific Support Department TSS. The Key Person shall be responsible for system engineering tasks. In this area of work, the tasks will typically include Support to the preparation of studies and proposals for new EARS services Support to the user consultation process during preparations for and definition of new services Technical liaison with the international partners providing the software packages for product processing of the satellite instrument data, including identification of test data and test environment Definition and integration of the data handling and product processing systems for the new EARS services Coordination and definition of technical interfaces with the external partners and service providers supporting EARS Support to the definition of EARS system evolution activities. Coordination of their implementation with relevant EUMETSAT teams and external partners Definition and implementation of the product quality monitoring functions with the support of the relevant instrument and software engineers Preparation of design documentation and other relevant documentation Coordination of system verification and validation through test plans, test procedures, test data and test tools Support to the configuration management of the EARS systems Support during inclusion of new Direct Readout Reception Stations or during major changes of existing Direct Readout Reception Stations prior to their inclusion in the operational service Coordination of the maintenance and evolution of the operational EARS system, in particular in response to the availability of new versions of the operational product processing packages and other key software packages Support to the international coordination activities relevant for EARS Support to the promotion of the EARS services at relevant internal and external events Furthermore, the Key Person shall provide support to the operations of the EARS services. In this area of work the tasks will typically include Support the coordination and announcement of system changes to the operational system with the relevant teams in Operations and Services to Users Department and the Technical and Scientific Support Department When relevant raise, investigate and coordinate the resolution of anomalies with appropriate modifications or developments Provide support and guidance to the relevant teams in the Operations and Services to Users Department, in particular regarding system operations and product processing aspects When relevant, provide User Service with information required by Users about services, including documentation and replies to User queries. Essential requirements In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline, the Key Person should have as a prerequisite At least 3 years of experience with design, development and integration of operational ground systems providing 24 x 7 services Experience of Earth observation processing systems Experience of system verification and validation Familiarity with the Linux operating system, shell programming languages e.g. bash and high level programming languages e.g. Java or Python The capability to perform software modifications and developments for the purpose of integrating and adapting existing software packages into the EARS system The Key Person shall have good communications skills to allow the effective communication of information under a variety of circumstances. Shehe should be used to working proactively within a small team, being able to work with the minimum of supervision. The variety of the tasks and the scope and complexity of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. Desirable skills Working knowledge and experience in the following areas would be considered an advantage Processing of satellite sounder, imager or scatterometer observations Experience with the handling of meteorological data Familiarity with the data formats used for Direct Readout by the NOAA and EUMETSAT polar orbiting satellites Experience with the operations or engineering of Direct Readout Reception Stations Communication networks and interface definitions Experience to work with geographically distributed teams Experience with Interface design Experience of cooperating and coordinating external partners Other information Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory Standby callout support and shift work will be necessary occasionally Travel may be required Must be an EU national or possess a valid German Work Residence Permit Foreseen start date is 01 July 2013 To guarantee that your application is processed, please apply via our website httpwww.scisys.dewhereweworkspacecareersspacejobs.html
