In a change of pace, the Federal Trade Commission recently decided not to pursue an enforcement action against Verizon Communication, Inc. following an investigation into whether Verizon violated Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act, by engaging in "unfair or deceptive acts or practices" when it failed to secure the routers used to provide High Speed Internet and FIOS Internet services to its customers in "a reasonable and appropriate manner." The FTC determined that Verizon provided routers to its customers with the outdated Wired Equivalency Privacy encryption standard.
