Position Reference 970 We are currently looking for a Flight DynamicsOrbit determination Engineer to work at ESOC premises in the city of Darmstadt, Germany. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Routine orbit determination of all interplanetary and lagrangian missions in routine operations, including e.g. Mars Express, ExoMars TGO and GAIA. GAIA long term orbit reconstruction shall be run every quarter of the year. Cruise orbit determination for interplanetary mission, e.g. RSP, JUICE BepiColombo and Solar orbiter. Orbit determination for interplanetary missions for critical phase e.g. planetary approach, planetary swingbys, e.g. BepiColombo, Solo, RSP, JUICE. FD systems development and maintenance Extension and modification of orbit determination tools e.g. MODS, GODOT, as required. Implementation of auxiliary tools and scripts, in support of orbit determination tasks. MODS Modular Orbit Determination Suite is ESOCs legacy orbit determination software written in FORTRAN and which is based on AMFIN. The core orbit determination program BODIT is one element of MODS. GODOT General Orbit Determination and Optimisation Toolkit is the new FD common infrastructure software written in C. Applications and libraries that are developed and used for operational orbit determination tasks are based on GODOT. In addition, a PYTHON environment is used for performing auxiliary operations related analysis and tasks. Launch preparation Integration of the FD orbit tools in the operational platform. Testing of tools at unit, subsystem and system level. Participation and support to FD system tests. Participation and support to FD system initialisation. Participation and support to ESOC wide simulations. Support to mission readiness tests and tracking campaigns with the ground stations as required by the mission profile LEOP support in the orbit determination domain JUICE, RSP and EUCLID Setup of FD Orbit subsystem for LEOP support, support for stations tracking calibration campaigns, assessment of launcher performance, early orbit determination. Orbit analysis, e.g. to review mission design aspects or provide consultancy for ground segment and ESA project teams of interplanetary and science missions. Oncall support may be required during LEOP periods and for critical operations. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory University degree in a relevant engineering field, astronomy, mathematics or physics. Very good skills in linear algebra, in particular for problem solving related to geometry in the Euclidean 3dimensional space. Very good skills in calculus in one or several variables. Skills in numerical methods for equations solving, integration of differential equations, function approximation and interpolation, optimisation, linear algebra problems. Very good skills in classical mechanics, including kinematics and dynamics of point masses, dynamics of rigid bodies, dynamics expressed in noninertial reference frames, e.g. including dynamics in rotating frames, rotation dynamics expressed in body fixed frame, conservation laws in mechanics, gravitational forces and field, orbit dynamics, Keplerian orbits and Kepler laws. Skills to apply above knowledge to develop solutions to technical problems in cooperation with customers and other experts. Very good C programming skills and experience, in particular in objectoriented design and coding skills using C as main programming language. Experience in scripting languages, e.g. python, shell scripting languages. Experience in Linux operating system. Will to take operational responsibility in multidiscipline teams. Coordinate and interact with other service providers in operations and other fields. Ability to work independently. Familiarity with the ESOC environment. Familiarityexperience with Flight Dynamics operations engineering tasks. Experience dealing with external interfaces. Experience with Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration Fluency in English, both written and spoken. The following skills would be highly desirable Being familiar with different representations of rotation in 3D, thus including the representation of SC attitude cosine direction matrix, Euler symmetric parameters quaternions, Eulerangles, .... Ability to solve mechanics problems via analytical mechanics methods e.g. Lagrangian formulation. Knowledge of Fortran 77952003. How to Apply Looking to take your career to the next level? Interested applicants should submit their CV and Cover Letter to RHEAs Recruitment team at careersrheagroup.com no later than 27082021.
