This is a permanent position, calling for at least three years experience of working with Java across the full software development life cycle. You will be placed on assignment based near Munich in Germany for several years. Candidates should ideally be available to start in January 2017. Our client is a 16nation intergovernmental research organisation for astronomy. An individual who is not an EU citizen may be eligible to receive a German Blue Card permit if they hold a recognised degree. The main working language is English. The role involves the development and maintenance of software applications and services supporting operational and scientific requirements of large, complex astronomical instruments and observatories.. The software includes tools for proposal submission, observation preparation and execution, archive ingestion and retrieval, data organization and execution of data reduction pipelines. In addition to the core software development, the assigned tasks require requirements analysis in periodic interaction with project scientists, test automation, software integration, deployment and enduser support. An agile, featuredriven development process will be followed. The key experience and attributes sought are At least three years experience of working with Java across the full software development life cycle. Very good knowledge of relational databases and objectrelational mapping technologies. Strong Linux experience. Proven experience developing dynamic web applications using HTML, CSS and Javascript. Solid practical familiarity with modern software engineering practices and tools, including configuration control tools, incremental and iterative development, unit and integration testing and build systems like Ant or Maven. Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous Distributed storage systems GlusterFS, Ceph Search platforms Apache Solr, Elastic Search HibernateSpring GroovyGrails JQueryAngularJS Familiarity with astronomical data formats FITS Flexible Image Transport System Candidates must possess a University degree or equivalent.
