Within the Remote Sensing and Products Division RSP, the Junior Remote Sensing Scientists 3 Posts will support the development and scientific validation of environmental and climate products derived from data of atmospheric chemistry, optical imaging, and scatterometer instruments of the current and future EUMETSAT satellite systems and Copernicus missions operated by EUMETSAT Sentinels 3, 4, and 5. The recruitment of the Junior Remote Sensing Scientists 3 Posts will take the form of an assessment centre over two days, after which the successful candidates will be assigned to each post based on their profile and relevant strengths. During the application process, candidates will be asked to declare if they prefer one or more of the posts. Preferences will be considered but cannot be guaranteed. DUTIES Develop or improve algorithms for the extraction of weather and climate products in the areas of atmospheric chemistry, optical imaging or scatterometry, taking into account requirements from user communities Develop concepts for the synergetic use of observations from EUMETSAT andor Copernicus instruments Prototype processing software for the extraction of products from data of atmospheric chemistry, optical imaging, or scatterometer instruments Support the scientific validation of operational atmospheric chemistry, optical imaging, or scatterometer products, based on interactions with the user communities Assist with inhouse and external scientific studies relevant to new scientific concepts for the future development of operational products. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Good theoretical knowledge of remote sensing physics relevant to measurements of atmospheric chemistry, optical imaging, or scatterometer instruments Knowledge of data processing algorithms, preferably for the extraction of products from atmospheric chemistry, optical imaging, or scatterometer instruments of Earth observation satellites Experience working with numerical methods andor algorithmic development using e.g. MATLAB, IDL, Python, CC A demonstrable learning orientation and the willingness to expand own knowledgeskills Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, combined with a proven ability to work within a team Strengths in analysis, synthesis and presentation of complex problems and solutions. A university degree in remote sensing, meteorology, oceanography or another relevant discipline. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS The initial contract will be under the EUMETSAT Early Career Employee Programme ECEP, for two 2 years with grade A1. Subject to successful performance, a further contract of 5 years duration will be awarded in a post graded A2A4. Additional contracts may be awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of followup contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63, and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT. This post is graded A1 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 4393 per month net of internal tax which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
