Job Title Mechanisms Architect Site Location Harwell Travel Percentage 10 Travels in Europe to be foreseen Role Reports To Thales Alenia Space UK MechanicalThermal Engineering Manager No. Direct Reports none Primary Purpose of Role As a Mechanism Architect, to take responsibility for the delivery of Mechanisms for space projects To lead the design of the Mechanical and Thermal architecture of space Mechanisms, equipment and GSE, including Development planning Derisking activities Sizing and design justification Design of space hardware and ancillary equipment ie, test hardware. Verification and testing Industrialisation, delivery and postdelivery support. To coach and train lessexperienced staff members in Mechanism design and development. To lead and develop the Mechanism Architecture capability in TASUK. Principal Relationships Relationships will be required to be built and maintained with the following principals MechanicalThermal Team Engineering Manager Project Managers and Workpackage Managers Team members and Architects from other disciplines Suppliers Customers, including Space Agencies and commercial entities Collaborators Key Responsibilities and tasks Lead the design of the Mechanical and Thermal architecture of space Mechanisms, equipment and GSE. Lead the technical evolution of space Mechanisms projects at equipment, subsystem and systems level, from conception through to delivery. Plan, perform and evaluate the results of Mechanical, Thermal and performance testing for mechanisms from breadboard to flight levels including functional testing, environmental testing thermalvacuum, vibration, shock and life testing.Plan and conduct activities to raise the TRL of mechanisms, mechanism concepts and their components. Perform or oversee the calculations needed for sizing and verification of Mechanisms and components, including hand calculations, FEA, Thermal Analysis, Rigid Body Analysis as required. Assess new suppliers, materials, components, data, software and methods for spacecraft Mechanisms. Generate the documents and review materials needed to support projects and reviews. Manage the communications, inputs and outputs needed for the technical team, including documents, meetings and reviews. Budgets and forecasts maintenance. Risk register maintenance. Generate technical specifications and interface requirements ie, for motors, gearboxes, bearings. Development planning, and management of development activities needed to validate a product and its performance at all stages, including analysis and testing at mechanism and part level. Manage subcontractors, including inputs to the procurement and selection process and the support of reviews of suppliers developments and deliveries. Manage customers, manage inputs to customer reviews. Develop and manage the TASUK internal procedures and documentation related to Mechanism Development.Also manage the skills acquisition and training for younger members of the team. Key Performance Indicators KPIs for the role will be specifically developed with the role holder however these will cover Delivery of designs and associated documentation within the constraints of Project schedules. Robust Mechanism Designs which meet project requirements with minimal need for iteration or rework at late stages. Robust methods for Mechanism design and development incorporated into TASUK work practices. Quality of documentation. Experience and Skills An experienced, knowledgeable engineer who offers deep technical knowledge of Space Mechanisms and a strong track record of Mechanisms development, including a knowledge of best practice. The following is necessary for the role Experience as an Architect for space Mechanism project. Knowledge of the space environment and how it impacts on Mechanism design. Experience of performing sizing calculations including motorization margins, bearing size, bearing preload, launchlock devices, lifetime, material and joint safety margins. Knowledge of ECSSEST3301C Experienceknowledge of typicallyused parts and materials including actuators, bearings, lubricants, flexible couplings harnesses and hoses, thermal protection, position sensors, launch lock devices, metals, composites, coatings as well as the industry suppliers for these. Experienceknowledge of manufacturing techniques for prototyping and also production conventional and advanced and how these affect the design. The following would be an asset Direct experience of performing rigid body analysis or FEA on space Mechanisms using MSC software. Direct experience of Mechanical design using Catia. Work Package or Project Management. Experience of bidding for Mechanism development work, to industry and Space Agencies. Education Qualifications The following is necessary for the role Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University with a minimum 21 or equivalent. The following would be an asset Participation in the ESTL Space Tribology course, or an equivalent. A Masters or higher degree. Membership of a professional Institution.
