Description You will have the opportunity to support scientific operations of the mission XMMNewton. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Contribute to instrument calibration or scientific performance monitoring within team activities. Possibly, development of new algorithms or shared scripts for scientific analysis. Optimising the setup of the instruments to carry out the desired observation by assisting astronomers and assure the safety of instruments Supporting to the Observing Time Allocation Committee OTAC by reviewing all incoming observation proposals and determining which observations should be assigned. Systematic processing of scientific mission data to ensure the highlevel products by the Scientific Community. Quality control of pipeline products together with Users Group. Production and regular updating of the XMMNewton source catalogue performing the definition of contents and scientific validation. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory You have a Science PhD or Masters Degree from a recognised institution of secondary studies University, Ecole suprieure, etc or equivalent. You have at least 4 years of relevant experience. You have expertise in astronomical observations, preferably Xray astronomy, to understand the needs and requirements of the XMMNewton community for the planning and implementation of requested observations and to competently deal with community questions on these observations. You have good command of commonly used generic analysis software, like IDL, or Python, and of Xray astronomical data analysis software in particular, with preference to the XMMNewton SAS, FTOOLs and XSPEC or similar, in order to competently interact with and support the community in their use of XMMNewton data. You have a good understanding of the tasks in scientific operations support for an international space or ground based observatory. You have a good knowledge of the specifics of astronomical Xray detectors, preferably those of XMMNewton. You are able to interact with and provide support to users from a worldwide community and crossing multiple disciplines. You are fluent in English written and spoken.
