SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. SRON has a prominent track record in the development of Xray detector technology and space instruments. SRON, as one of the leading institutes, has contributed to the instruments to Xray mission of ESA XMMNewton, NASA Chandra and Jaxa Hitomi. The Athena Xray mission has been selected by ESA as the next Large mission. It contains two main instruments a Wide Field Imager and an Xray spectroscopy instrument XIFU Xray Integral Field Unit. The launch of Athena is foreseen in 2031. For the XIFU instrument, SRON develops the Focal Plane Assembly, which can be seen as the optical heart of the instrument. The Flight Model has to be delivered around 2027, but several prototype models will be developed to test the technologies applied. In 2019, the first Development Model will be assembled and tested. The SRON team develops and tests the detector readout chain based on a stateoftheart superconducting Transition Edge Sensor detector array operating at millikelvin temperatures. The pixels are readout by Frequency Division Multiplexing. The readout electronics operate at MHz frequencies and consists in essence of superconducting highQ LCfilters and SQUID amplifiers.
