SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. SRON has a prominent track record in the development of Xray detector technology and space instruments. SRON, as one of the leading institutes, has contributed to the instruments of Xray mission of ESA XMMNewton, NASA Chandra and Jaxa Hitomi. The Athena Xray mission has been selected by ESA as the next Large mission. It contains two main instruments a Wide Field Imager and an Xray spectroscopy instrument XIFU Xray Integral Field Unit. The launch of Athena is foreseen in 2031. For the XIFU instrument, SRON develops the Focal Plane Assembly, which can be seen as the optical heart of the instrument. It contains a superconducting Transition Edge Sensor detector array operating at millikelvin temperatures. The pixels are readout by Frequency Division Multiplexing. The readout electronics operate at MHz frequencies and consists in essence of superconducting highQ LCfilters and SQUID amplifiers. The flight detector array is planned to be delivered by our NASA partners. Parallel to this, SRON develops the backup detector array, but with different design. Our Instrument Science Group has a vacancy for a Physicist Instrument Scientist fm vacancy number 1486 Project Outline Within a team of instrument scientist and engineers you will be responsible for testing of the detector arrays and data analysis. For this, an experimental setup exists, as well as test scripts and analysis software routines. Based on the test results, you will steer the improvement of detector arrays, measurement procedures and analysis software. You will operate the cryogenic He3He4 dilution cooler, and install or modify the test setups in it. You will report the results to ESA and also be responsible for publications. The focus of your role will depend on your previous experience relevant to the fields of interest. Requirements Education in experimental physics, at a level of PhD. Experience in electrical engineering, software engineering or a discipline related to instrumentation is considered as a plus. The ideal candidate has experience with superconducting detectors, SQUIDs, or cryogenic test facilities. Innovative and creative, and able to deliver within the boundaries of the project timeline. Greenwire: The leader of the Department of Energy effort to drive down the cost of solar power enjoys a big challenge. When Lidija Sekaric was recruited for the SunShot initiative in 2010, she turned up her nose at the program's goal -- lowering the installed cost of solar from $2 a watt to 50 cents by 2020. "We were not ambitious enough for her," then-Director Minh Le recalled in a recent interview. "I pitch it to her that we are going to reduce costs by 75 percent, and her immediate reaction -- with...

Al Gore inspires 'CO2,' an opera; a physicist lectures on climate change w/ string quartet

2015-06-04 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ClimateWire: Climatologist David Adamson stood alone onstage. A film featuring images of the Earth appeared on a screen behind him. He spoke directly to the audience, laying out the case that climate change threatens civilization as we know it. "Greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2, chlorofluorocarbons and methane, produced by modern industry and the modern way of life, are causing the Earth's climate to heat up with potentially devastating consequences for the future," Adamson said. "And we now know, because...
