SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. Therefore, the institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical, Earth science and exoplanetary research. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. Our Earth Science Group has a vacancy for a Postdoc Scientist fm Vacancy number 1401 Project Outline At the Paris climate conference COP 21 in December 2015, 195 countries adopted the first legally binding climate agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with the aim to limit global warming to well below 2oC by 2100. To support the monitoring of national emission reduction pledges, European scientists are preparing the launch of the Copernicus CO2 monitoring constellation. It will consist of 3 or 4 satellites for highresolution imaging of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The challenge is to meet the required measurement sensitivity and accuracy, which are highly demanding for longlived greenhouse gases such as CO2. An important factor limiting the accuracy of space borne CO2 measurements is atmospheric scattering of light on aerosol and cirrus cloud particles. Several options are considered to mitigate such errors, including the deployment of a dedicated aerosol sensor on the spacecraft. The aim of this project is to investigate the benefit of this solution, as well as alternatives, using Observing System Simulation Experiments OSSEs. These experiments simulate the impact of scattering induced errors on CO2 emissions that are derived from the measurements using inverse modelling techniques. The OSSEs will address the estimation of anthropogenic CO2 emissions on spatial scales ranging from regional scale of countries to local scale of cities. The assumptions used in the OSSEs will be based on measurements from NASAs Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2, which has been collecting CO2 data since summer 2014. Tasks The successful applicant will design OSSE experiments using TM54DVAR regional scale and WRFCHEM local scale to test the performance of the CO2 monitoring system depending on the approach to mitigate systematic retrieval errors from atmospheric scattering. OCO2 data will be analyzed to ensure that the assumptions that are used in the inversion setup are realistic. The research will be conducted in cooperation with other international partners within two European H2020 projects CHE and SCARBO, requiring active participation at annual assemblies and project telecons and presentation of the achieved progress. As part of the SCARBO project, aircraft campaign will be conducted to investigate the synergy between remotely sensed CO2 and aerosol. The applicant will support the flight planning using model results and will assist in the interpretation of the data. The main outcomes will be published in peer reviewed journals. Requirements For this project we are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated and result driven scientist with a PhD degree in atmospheric physicschemistry, with experience in atmospheric inverse modelling of longlived greenhouse gases. Experience with the use of real observations in situ or satellite measurements is considered a clear asset. Good knowledge of the English language is essential, and the candidate should be capable to work both independently and in a team. Functional competencies Results oriented Analytical Can communicate clearly SRON core competencies Innovative Focused on collaboration Responsibility A global player Flexibility Employment conditions Employment of this fulltime position as a Scientist C at SRONUtrecht is by NWOI The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Institutes and will be for a period of 2 years.
