Samsung acquires Boxee for its connected TV technology

2013-07-04 07:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) US start-up Boxee, which makes mobile video streaming apps and a STB for connected TV, has been acquired for an undisclosed amount by Samsung. Boxee says on its website that by joining Samsung it will be able to work on products to be used by tens of millions of people and will help to shape the future of TV. Although the company indicates that its users will see minimal impact to their devices, the Cloud DVR beta provided to some customers will be discontinued on 10 July. Samsung told Bloomberg in an e-mailed statement that the acquisition will help it continue to improve user experience across its connected devices. The Korean giant, which has not issued a press release on the acquisition yet, is reported to have paid around USD 30 million.
