Job description For Termas longterm customer, the European Southern Observatory ESO, an international astronomical institute based in Garching close to Munich, we are currently looking for an experienced Software Engineer to support the ALMA Computing Team within the European ALMA Support Centre in JAVA software development. The Atacama Large Millimetersubmillimeter Array ALMA, an international partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile, is one of the largest astronomical observatories in existence. ALMA is a single telescope of revolutionary design, composed of 66 high precision antennas located on the Chajnantor plateau, at 5000 meters altitude in northern Chile. All antennas are now at the ALMA site and the observatory is transitioning towards fullscale science operations. Responsibilities We seek an experienced minimum 3 years software engineer to work on the full software development life cycle of JAVA applications JAVA webbased applications JavaScript singlepage applications Candidate selection will be driven by software skills, domain knowledge and ability to function in a scientific environment. Fulltime position Start July 2016 Based at ESOs facilities in Garching Munich, Germany, but occasional short trips to the observatory in Chile and other partnership locations 12 weeks are necessary. Qualifications Competencies Essential skills and experience University degree, in the domain of Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics or equivalent Minimum of 3 years professional experience in software development. Strong skills developing applications in JAVA programming language Experience minimum 1 year interfacing JAVA to relational databases within highlevel frameworks JDBC, Hibernate, Spring Experience developing Java webbased applications servlets, JSPs Experience developing JavaScript singlepage applications Angular JS, jQuery Experience in the full lifecycle of software projects from requirements gathering, design and implementation, to deployment and maintenance Practical familiarity with modern software engineering practices and tools Configuration control tools Incremental and iterative development Unit and integration testing Documentation Familiarity with Linux Excellent command of the English Language, very good oral and written communication skills Desirable skills and experience Experience in Javabased desktop GUI programming Familiarity with build tools Makefile, Ant, Maven, Gradle Background in astronomy or astrophysics, especially radio interferometry Exposure international andor scientific organisations What can Terma offer At Terma, we consider skilled employees, enthusiasm and job satisfaction as the very foundation of our success and as a prerequisite for the development of the bestinclass solutions that Terma provides.
