This vacancy note concerns an onsite consulting position at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany. Space Debris Engineer 1723067 Job Description We are looking for a Space Debris Engineer to support our client ESOC. You will join the Space Debris Office, which covers the support, analysis, development and research activities in this field. You will be contributing to Provision of compliance verification analysis directly to mission customers. Mission milestone reviews for compliance aspects w.r.t. mitigation guidelines. Perform, in support of missions, runs with DRAMA, Scarab and Snapshot and document the results and provide custodian services for the Snapshot software. Provide a methodology for the verification of protected zone clearance and onground casualty aspects for missions operating on HEOs and orbits around Lagrange Points. Contribute to guidelines and handbooks on the matter of compliance assessment for HEOs and Lagrange Point orbits. Define the SOW and initiate the procurement of external analysis support contracts, validate and accept the output, in assistance to the customer. Establish a space object environment index concept based on fast cloud propagation algorithms. Expand the approach for longer time spans and all LEO altitude bands. Followup and coordinate related Research Fellow and NPI activities in view of the offices approach for space object environment indexing. Support OPSGR actions on space object environment indexing. Setup and make accessible the index concept. Draft and act as bookkeeper of the two standard documents on compliance assessment Classification of geosynchronous objects and the annual ESA compliance report insert required additional features e.g. environment index to the two documents. Contributions on space environment evolution studies involving DISCOS and other databases. Provide the above services during CDF sessions. Contribute to the definition of the studies for GSTP and other ESA study programs in the area of space debris. Provide Training on OPSGR software and processes to internal and external trainees also in training sessions not organised by ESA. Provide routine operation of ESAs conjunction event prediction system for internal and external customers in a 247 shift scheme up to 7 weeks per year. Detailed analysis and consultancy in the case of a highrisk conjunction event in liaison with the Flight Control Teams, external customers and Flight Dynamics. Contribute to the Maintenance of ESAs conjunction event prediction system and documentation. Support to the interfacing with external entities, such as JSpOC for the analysis of conjunction events. Contribute to the evolution and Upgrade of ESAs DISCOS database system. Contribute to the ESAs reentry forecasting process. Standby for project support in the areas of Cleanspace and SSA. Participate to the offices regular monthly infrastructure coordination meetings and monthly routine meeting. Present and promote ESA achievements including Recent research and work performed at the space debris office at international conferences once per year. Support related public relation or outreach activities. Support the organisation of conferences and workshops. Run space debris office demonstration towards VIP tours in the space debris facility. Required Skills and Experience A relevant engineering university degree in the field of astronomy, mathematics or physics. Minimum of 3 years industry work experience. The skills to apply knowledge to develop solutions to technical mathematical and dynamical problems in cooperation with customers and other experts. Ability to define, implement, validate and operate software which applies the above solutions using e.g. Linux scripting languages, Fortran, C, Matlab, Python. Good communication and presentation skills. Fluency in English, both in speech and writing. Able to coordinate and interact with other service providers in Mission Analysis and other fields. Ability to work independently. OnCall service will be required up to 7 weeks per year. Average of 1 European and 1 international mission per year. Desirable Skills and Experience Familiarity with the ESOC environment. Familiarity with ESAs CDF, IADC, OPSGR Systems and the SSA Program and Systems and Reference Frames. Familiarityexperienced with Mission Analysis tasks, Orbital Mechanics, Space Debris Matters observation, modelling, mitigation, risk assessment, Orbit determination aspects, Space surveillance techniques and principles, Software engineering. Experience with Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration, versioning systems and configuration management, database systems, in particular the use of SQL, basic understanding of the hardware PCs, RAID, back up mechanisms . Ability to multitask efficiently working on multiple activities multiple missions simultaneously.
