Overall Purpose of the Job Team lead for the Space UK product design and production team, including the product supply chain, across Space UK Key Accountabilities Production of manufacturable and repeatable hardware product designs, to time cost and quality Production of compliant and safe hardware on time, cost and quality Support the Product and System Leads in the definition and execution of effective design Development and verification programmes of work, from bid stage through to delivery Contribute to the definition of Product Development Plans and Roadmaps Establish and execute Industrialisation Plans Roadmaps in line with the product level equivalents and the business strategy Team leader and line management responsibilities for the team engineers Responsible for technicians, including responsibility for sustaining and development of the teams technical capability and skills Establish a core Design for Manufacture and Test DFMT ethos within the team Actively promote to the wider Space UK team Champion DFMT from prototype through to end product delivery Supplier selection together with supply chain experts and Product Assurance Promote and lead continuous process improvement initiatives Support business development and sales activities Occasional foreign travel to Europe may be required for project delivery Challenges Evolve a design for manufacture mindset and method of working across the team Establish robust and reliable product supply chains Inform and challenge product and system level tradeoffs with respect to production cost Repeatability and reliability of delivery Determining a pragmatic approach to achieving solutions against conflicting performance, programmatic or budgetary drivers PERSON SPECIFICATION Education, Qualifications and Training Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering or technical discipline Desirable proven experience working in an equivalent engineering role Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required Experience in product DFM in a recurring, commercial engineering field The ability to work with minimum supervision, lead technical teams of engineers and scientists, able to work in a multinational environment, and have good written and oral presentations skills Experience of leading teams of engineers and scientists Ability to work at all technical levels from system to component level design, equipment build and test. Ability to effectively communicate with people at all appropriate levels within the organisation and externally with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders Desirable Criteria Knowledge andor experience of a lean manufacturing environment would be desirable Experience in design, development and verification of products for space flight applications would be beneficial Knowledge of space industry standards ECSS and bestpractice would be a distinct advantage Membership of relevant professional body e.g. IET Essential Personal Qualities High Integrity, lead by example, engaging and empowering your team Offer flexibility in work location and hours Problem solving innovative Team player Effective communicator Tenacious
