A Spanish leader company in Aerospace Engineering and Scientific services with more than 45 years of experience working for NASA and 35 years working for ESA seeks a candidate for postion of Science Operation Engineer Tasks included in the service and to be totally or partially distributed among XMMNewton scientists by the Science Support Team manager in agreement with the service company managers Provision of Instrument andor Calibration Scientists, Archive Scientist and Pipeline Scientist Monitor of the stability of the instruments using scientific telemetry and processed data and provision of daily support to the operations of the instruments Implementation of calibration results into the XMMNewton Current Calibration Files, following the verification of the calibration scientific quality, as well as of standard canned redistribution matrix files for XMMNewton users Perform crosscalibration across the Xray instruments onboard XMMNewton as well as with instruments onboard other satellites Perform absolute calibration of the OM instrument. Support to the Observing Time Allocation Committee OTAC The OTAC reviews all incoming observation proposals and determines which observations should be assigned observing time, this service may involve provision of support to the Project Scientist and the OTAC in this process. Maintenance of user support documentation Users are kept informed about the status of the mission and about support services through extensive support documentation offered onthrough the XMMNewton web pages. Provision of feedback to, and attendance at, appropriate working groups as determined by the Science Support Team manager in agreement with the service company manager. Provision and maintenance of longterm mission planning To ensure that all high priority observations are performed, a long term observing plan is maintained and regularly updated. This includes arranging coordinated observations with other observatories. Participation on the activities related to the systematic processing of all scientific mission data as they become available through a pipeline in order to produce highlevel products of direct use by the scientific community and for ingestion the archive. Provision of scientific requirements following recommendations of the Project Scientist and Users Group through the PPS Scientist and coordination and participation on the quality control of the pipeline products. Participation in the production and regular updating of the XMMNewton source catalogues, most importantly in the definition of their content and in their scientific validation. This is currently a task done outside the XMMNewton SOC, but the SOC can be asked to provide support to it. Provision of user requirements for the Science Archive, check their implementation, monitor and improve its performance and its use by the community and interact with the Scientific Archives Team at ESAC, with the aim of maximizing the value of the XMMNewton Science Archive, the tool for the astronomers to get access to the data and the main legacy from XMMNewton to the astronomical community. This is done by provision of the Archive Scientist, who shares this responsibility with other team responsibilities. Provision of feedback to users at science conferences through the manning of helpdesk booths, if needed, or XMMNewton data handling presentations. Specific qualification requirements The service position covered by this package will require a university Ph.D. degree in a relevant science area, with preference for astronomy or physics. Required experience Strong background in astronomical research, with a good record of science publications in the astronomical refereed literature and with part of those signed by the candidate as first author. A few years working in research institutes or universities at postdoctoral level, with an active research programme, preferably aligned with the scientific capabilities of XMMNewton Astronomical Xray data analysis Astronomical spectroscopic data analysis Good command of commonly used astronomical software, like IDL, and of Xray astronomical data analysis software in particular, with preference to the XMMNewton SAS and the XSPEC and FTOOLs. Preferred experience Very good knowledge of the XMMNewton instruments, strongly preferred Monitoring and calibration of astronomical Xray detectors Monitoring and calibration of opticalUV detectors used in space astronomy Calibration of astronomical spectroscopic data Scientific or spacecraft operations support with a major international space or ground based observatory Support to the professional astronomical community, with preference for the astronomers using spacebased missions Interactive analysis and pipeline processing of astronomical Xray data Use of scientific data in support of science research, with preference for Xray and spacebased data. The service will be provided operating in an international team environment, requiring that the personnel providing it have good analytical, interpersonal and communication skills, are flexible and able to work as members of interdisciplinary teams and are fluent in English. APPLICATIONS Interested candidates should send cv and cover letter to seleccionisdefe.es. The job code must included on the subjet.
