Telstra to cut 6,000 jobs by end of FY19, take AUD 500 mln impairment charge

(Telecompaper) Australian operator Telstra has announced that "as a result of good progress on its T22 strategy", it expects to take a non-cash impairment and write down the value of its legacy IT assets by around AUD 500 million. Telstra also announced it is increasing guidance on its FY19 restructuring costs by AUD 200 million, as a result of bringing forward consultation on proposed job reductions.

(Telecompaper) Casa Systems CEO Jerry Guo said NetComm was a strong strategic fit and that he believes the deal will create a global leader in the rapidly growing broadband enablement space for service providers across all access technologies. The acquisition will also diversify Casa Systems revenues both geographically and by product channel. It will expand Casa Systems' customer reach with several new Tier 1 global communications services provider customers and adds fixed wireless products to the company's portfolio, enabling it to address the large 5G fixed wireless access market.
Australia raises AUD 853 mln in auction of 5G spectrum in 3.6 GHz band

(Telecompaper) Four companies have won 5G spectrum in the Australian Communication and Media Authority's latest auction of the 3.6 GHz band. According to the regulator, all 350 lots available in the auction were sold, realising total revenue of AUD 853 million. Dense Air Australia won 29 lots for AUD 18.49 million; Mobile JV, the joint venture of TPG Telecom and Vodafone Hutchison Australia, won 131 lots for AUD 263.2 million; Optus won 47 lots for AUD 185 million; and Telstra won 143 lots for AUD 386 million. Licences won at auction will commence in March 2020 and will run until 13 December 2030.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia and TPG agree AUD 15 billion merger to create integrated operator

(Telecompaper) Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) and TPG Telecom have agreed the terms of a merger to establish a new integrated operator in Australia worth an estimated AUD 15 billion. Vodafone said the merged company "will be a more powerful challenger to Telstra and Optus", with an integrated fixed and mobile offering. It will also be better able to invest in next-generation mobile and fixed networks and provide service and product upgrades for Australian customers.

Equinix to acquire Australia's Metronode for AUD 1 bln

(Telecompaper) Data centre operator Equinix has agreed to acquire Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan's equity interest in the Metronode group of companies. The all-cash transaction is worth AUD 1.035 billion (USD 792 million). The acquisition is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2018.
