Vocus ends takeover talks with KKR, as FY profit hit by AUD 1.5 bln impairment

(Telecompaper) All takeover discussions between Australian operator Vocus and KKR have ceased, with the US investment house saying it is unable to come out with terms acceptable to the Vocus board. KKR made a bid in June for the company at AUD 3.50 per share. Vocus then received another takeover offer from private equity group Affinity, in July. Giving its preference to KKR, Vocus provided the investment firm with the opportunity to conduct due diligence on a non-exclusive basis but the parties were unable to reach a mutually acceptable deal.
Telstra commits AUD 3 bln more for networks, digitisation

(Telecompaper) Telstra said it will invest up to AUD 3 billion more into networks and digitisation over the next three years, in a move CEO Andrew Penn said will ensure the company's technological leadership and a significantly improved customer experience. "Our customers and our networks are our biggest assets. We must invest to set new standards and deliver excellent experiences for our customers," Penn said. The CEO will gradually disclose more details about the investment programme over the course of 2017 to 2019 but said a significant proportion of the incremental investment will go towards transforming the next generation of networks.

Vocus to buy Nextgen networks business for AUD 807 million

(Telecompaper) Australian operator Vocus is continuing its expansion with the acquisition of Nextgen Group's networks business for up to AUD 807 million. The company will acquire the North West Cable system and the other 50 percent held by Nextgen in the planned Australia Singapore Cable. The deal includes Nextgen's 17,000km national fibre network, the almostcompleted subsea Port Hedland to Darwin cable and the proposed Perth to Singapore subsea cable. Nextgen will continue to own its data centre business, Metronode, which operates as a separate entity.

Telstra to return AUD 1.5 billion to shareholders

(Telecompaper) Telstra announced a capital management program of at least AUD 1.5 billion to commence in its first half of the 2017 financial year. The distribution to shareholders will be in addition to the ordinary dividend, with specific details to be made available at Telstra's full-year results presentation on 11 August. In an announcement at its investors day, Telstra said it is examining various ways to return capital to shareholders, with the exact nature, amount and timing dependent upon market conditions and all necessary regulatory approvals. It plans to use the proceeds from the recently announced sale of Autohome shares to fund the capital management program.

Australia raises AUD 544 mln in 1,800 MHz band auction

(Telecompaper) Optus, Telstra, TPG and Vodafone all secured spectrum in Australia's 1,800 MHz band auction, resulting in total proceeds of AUD 543.5 million, the Australian Communications and Media Authority announced. Optus will pay the most, at AUD 196 million, Testra AUS 191 million, TPG Internet AUD 88 million and Vodafone AUD 68 million. The auction of regional lots of 2x5MHz started in November last year and ran for 29 working days. The new frequencies are expected to help the operators strengthen 4G coverage throughout the country. The 1,800 MHz band is already used extensively in major cities. The technology-neutral licences are valid until June 2028.
