Huge iceberg calves off Antarctic glacier

2013-07-10 16:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: An iceberg half the size of Greater London has calved off Pine Island glacier in the Antarctic. This week a radar instrument on the German satellite TerraSAR-X captured an image of a crack having grown to extend across the entire ice shelf at the front of the glacier since 2011. Scientists say that the 720-sqkm iceberg calved off in a natural event unrelated to the effects of global warming. Andy Smith of the British Antarctic Survey said: "Although there's nothing to suggest this event is...

Antarctic's Pine Island glacier produces giant iceberg

2013-07-10 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Pine Island Glacier (PIG), the longest and fastest flowing glacier in the Antarctic, has spawned a huge iceberg. The block measures about 720 sq km in area - roughly eight times the size of Manhattan Island in New York. Scientists have been waiting for the PIG to calve since October 2011 when they first noticed a spectacular crack spreading across its surface. Confirmation that the fissure had extended the full width of the glacier was obtained on Monday. It was seen by the German TerraSAR-X...

Europe's Largest Glacier Comes to New York

2013-06-29 19:27:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

National Geographic: By the time Olafur Eliasson came up with the idea to display chunks of glacier as an art exhibit, he had already spent a lot of time at the mouth of the Icelandic glacier Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in Europe, watching it melt. "Vatnajökull is the only place in the world where you can stand off on the sand and watch big chunks of glacier break," said Eliasson. The Danish-Icelandic artist believes most people are disconnected from the effects of climate change because they can't physically...

This is What a Melting Glacier Sounds Like

2013-02-07 09:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Desk: If a glacier melts in the Arctic and theres no one around, does it make a sound? Jonathan Perl thinks it does. The City College of New York musicologist was asked by climatologist Marco Tedesco to translate data records on Greenlands melting ice into sound. The result is a series of sonifications, on display through next week at CCNYs POLARSEEDS exhibit, that combine quantitative data with music to create an audio snapshot of climate change. Steady, long-term changes that are invisible to the...
