CHARLTON – It's been more than 40 days since Casella Waste Systems announced to a crowded health board meeting that 21 private wells in Charlton, near the Southbridge landfill, tested positive for pollutants, and residents say they are still waiting for answers. That night, William Gallien, whose home well at 74 H Foote Road was tainted by probable human carcinogen 1,4-dioxane at a level greater than safe drinking water guidelines, asked whether it was safe to bathe and wash dishes in his well water.

SOUTHBRIDGE Health Director Andrew R. Pelletier said in a statement on Monday that data suggests a Southbridge landfill is not the source of contamination of residential wells in Charlton, although he said additional work is needed to confirm the claim. Landfill operator Casella Waste Systems, doing business as Southbridge Recycling & Disposal Park, and Southbridge are determined to continue an investigation of the source of contamination, and, regardless of the source, Southbridge will work with Charlton to find a long-term solution, Mr. Pelletier said.

At the Nov. 3 meeting, Casella identified home wells within 500 feet of the landfill where probable human carcinogen 1,4-dioxane was detected during routine testing.
