Bangladesh 4G spectrum auction falls short of expectations

(Telecompaper) Bangladesh has raised a total of BDT 52.89 billion from its 4G spectrum auction, less than half the expected proceeds. Banglalink and Grameenphone acquired new spectrum to support the launch of LTE services, while Robi agreed to pay a fee to make its existing spectrum technology-neutral for 4G. The LTE services are expected to start later this month after the licences are issued.

EU spectrum regulators recommend award of 3.4-3.8, 26 GHz bands for 5G by 2020

(Telecompaper) The EU's Radio Spectrum Policy Group has issued its second opinion on 5G, to aid policymakers in planning for the next generation of mobile technology. The advisory group calls for large blocks of the 3.4-3.8 GHz band to be made available for mobile operators by 2020, as well as part of the 26 GHz band by the same date.

Ukraine awards first LTE spectrum licences

(Telecompaper) Ukraine has completed the tender of LTE licences in the 2.6 GHz band. All three mobile operators acquired spectrum and are expected to launch the first 4G services in the coming months. The start of 4G comes just two years after the country first got 3G services.

German regulator releases draft proposal for 5G spectrum auction

(Telecompaper) Germany's national telecoms regulator released a draft decision laying out its proposals for the arrangement and selection of an allocation procedure for usage rights for 5G frequencies. The regulator said it is planning to auction off two segments of 60 MHz of paired spectrum in the 2 GHz range and 300 MHz unpaired from the 3.6 GHz range for nationwide use. Frequencies will be allocated under certain conditions, for example requirements specifying where and at what time 5G networks should be built up.

French operators agree deal with govt to improve LTE coverage, obtain spectrum licence extension

(Telecompaper) Telecom regulator Arcep announced that the government has reached an important agreement with mobile network operators to enhance the quality of LTE services in France and extend coverage, particularly across rural areas and on the road/railway network. Under the deal, operators have agreed to accelerate the deployment of LTE over the next three years, committing to reach quality obligations monitored by the regulator. In exchange, they have obtained a spectrum licence extension for 900/1800/2100 MHz frequencies, with no change to the current annual licence fees.
