Recent Glacier Losses Are Mostly Driven by Human Activity, Study Says
2014-08-18 18:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Yale Environment 360: Roughly one-quarter of the global glacier mass loss between the years 1851 and 2010 can be attributed to human activities, and that fraction increased to more than two-thirds between 1991 and 2010, according to research published in the journal Science. The study is the first to document the extent of human contribution to glacier mass loss, which is driven by both naturally caused climate factors, such as fluctuations in solar radiation, and anthropogenic influences. In the 19th and first half...

Human impact on glacier melt increasing - study
2014-08-15 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
RTCC: Human activity is playing an increasing role in the melting of glaciers, Austrian and Canadian scientists have found. One of the most disruptive effects of climate change, glacier retreat leads to rising sea levels, landslides and unpredictable availability of water downstream. Meanwhile, a separate study found ice discharge from the Antarctica could raise sea levels by up to 37cm this century, more than previously thought. Scientists and policymakers are calling for international collaboration...

Research Looks at Impact of Human Manure Used as Fertilizer
2014-08-14 00:37:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: American Society of Animal Science Much like livestock manure, biosolids, or human manure is often applied to land as fertilizer. In fact, approximately 50% of all human excrement in the U.S. is spread on various terrains. This is considered a cost-friendly, sustainable method of sewage disposal. Biosolids, or processed human sewage sludge, are normally treated to remove bacteria and pollutants before they are applied to land. However, some toxicants are resistant to degradation and remain in the treated product. Chemicals commonly referred to as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC), which interact with and potentially alter physiological systems in the body, can be found in both unprocessed and processed biosolids. read more
