For the past five years, Microsoft has been forced to offer first-time Windows users in Europe a choice of web browser. This was a result of an EU ruling in 2009, which found that Microsoft had been unfairly abusing its operating system monopoly to push Internet Explorer into the hands of millions of unwitting, unfortunate users. Now, however, Microsoft is once again free to make Internet Explorer the default web browser in Windows.

Christmas schedule set for Heartland Express

In observance of the Christmas Holiday, the Brown County Heartland Express will not be operating, and the office will be closed on Christmas Day, Thursday, Dec. 25. Service will resume on Friday, Dec. 26. The transit system will only be operating until 12 noon on Christmas Eve Day, Wednesday, Dec. 24. Individuals needing transportation on Friday, Dec. 26 are asked to call the Heartland Express Office by noon on Wednesday, Dec. 24 to make arrangements for rides.

The reign of state Public Utilities Commission president Michael Peevey, scarred by scandals linked to a fatal explosion of natural gas in San Bruno, will soon conclude, an exit that combined with the Wednesday announcement that the PUC's executive director is also stepping down, will leave the struggling agency without its top two leaders. Peevey is due to preside over his final meeting of the five-member commission on Thursday, ending a tenure marked by his efforts to bolster green energy in California -- but tainted by evidence contained in emails that he created a culture at the regulatory agency that encouraged a cozy and accommodating relationship with utility behemoth PG&E.
