Some Syngenta AG shareholders are angry about the Swiss agribusiness giant's rejection of takeover proposals from rival Monsanto Co., raising the possibility that they could seek changes to Syngenta's board to make it more amenable to a deal. "The management of Syngenta is throwing away $15 billion to $20 billion of shareholders' money," said Mark Yockey, portfolio manager with Milwaukee-based Artisan Partners LP, which ranks among the top 10 Syngenta shareholders, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Crop science giant Syngenta AG saw its share price plunge Wednesday after competitor Monsanto announced it would end its months-long pursuit of a merger. Switzerland-based Syngenta , which has its North American headquarters in Greensboro, was trading at $79 a share at about 10 a.m. Wednesday when Monsanto announced it was backing away from its takeover attempts.

Monsanto has dropped its roughly $46 billion bid for rival Syngenta AG, bringing an end to a strongly resisted takeover bid that would have reshaped the global agriculture industry. Monsanto, the world's largest seller of biotech seeds, proposed in late April a deal that would have created a world leader in both seed and pesticide sales.

Agricultural business giant Monsanto is abandoning its takeover bid for competitor Syngenta AG after the Swiss chemical producer rejected its latest offer of nearly $47 billion.
