Orange maintains outlook as revenue trend improves in Q1

2014-04-29 08:51:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Orange reported improving trends in the first quarter, with the drop in revenues slowing compared to the previous quarter. Revenues were down 4.6 percent year-on-year to EUR 9.80 billion, hurt in part by negative forex effects (-0.6%). On a comparable basis, excluding regulatory effects, sales fell 4.9 percent in France and 5.1 percent in Poland, but rose 3.2 percent in Spain. The rest of the world was down 0.2 percent, as growth in the Mideast, Africa and Romania was offset by weakness in other European markets such as Slovakia and Belgium. Orange reported adjusted EBITDA down 3.4 percent to EUR 3.02 billion, with the margin up 0.4 percent point to 30.8 percent thanks to savings on sales and personnel costs. Capital expenditure was little changed year-on-year at EUR 1.16 billion in Q1. Orange attributed the improved results to its investments in fibre and LTE, as well as convergent offers. The operator also grew its customer base 4.2 percent year-on-year to 239.4 million. Orange maintained its outlook for full-year adjusted EBITDA of EUR 12.0-12.5 billion, a net debt ratio closer to 2x EBITDA by year-end and an increase in the dividend to 60 cents a share.

Samsung mobile sales, operating profit down in Q1

2014-04-29 08:19:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Samsung reported first-quarter revenues of KRW 53.68 trillion, up slightly from KRW 52.87 trillion a year earlier. The company's operating profit dipped to KRW 8.49 trillion from KRW 8.78 trillion, while net profit rose to KRW 7.57 trillion from KRW 7.15 trillion a year ago. Samsung saw a slowdown at its IT and mobile division, due to seasonality as well as competition and weaker demand in emerging markets. Revenues at the division fell to KRW 32.44 billion from KRW 32.82 trillion, and operating profit was down to KRW 6.43 trillion from KRW 6.51 trillion. Samsung said profits were up and smartphone shipments steady compared to Q4, thanks to better control of marketing costs and demand for low and mid-range models. The company also shipped almost 13 million tablets in the quarter, helped by its new Pro range. Samsung expects smartphone and tablet demand to improve somewhat in Q2, and said earnings should be solid thanks to the recent launch of the Galaxy S5 flagship phone, which is expected to surpass its predecessor in sales. For the rest of 2014, Samsung said it targets expansion in the Chinese LTE market as well as well as growing profitability from its wearables business. Its Display Panel and Consumer Electronics divisions should also improve results from Q2.

China Telecom service revenues up 8.1% in Q1

2014-04-28 09:12:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) China Telecom reported first-quarter revenues up 6.9 percent year-on-year to CNY 83.18 billion. Service revenues, excluding mobile device sales, rose a faster 8.1 percent to CNY 71.15 billion. EBITDA increased just 0.6 percent to CNY 25.09 billion, amid a rise in personnel and network costs, while net profit was up 17.9 percent to CNY 5.55 billion thanks to lower financing costs. China Telecom suffered a loss of 2.3 million mobile customers in the three months, for a total 183.2 million at the end of March. China Telecom's 3G subscriber base rose by 1 million compared to December to 104.1 million, and the operator launched its first LTE services in February. Mobile voice traffic was down compared to Q4 and Q1 2013, while China Telecom said ARPU was stable compared to 2013. In the fixed market, the company lost another 3 million local access customers compared to year-end, to finish March with a total 152.8 million, hurt by continued mobile substitution. Wireline broadband subscribers grew by 2.2 million in the same period, for a total 102.3 million.
