Europe votes to protect net neutrality, abolish mobile data roaming charges

In a stark reminder of just how different things are over the pond in Europe, the EU Parliament has voted in favor of abolishing mobile roaming fees and maintaining net neutrality. While US lawmakers have generally favored corporate entities, this is another great example of the European Union's general tendency to side with the consumer (or, in non-capitalist terms, the citizen). There's a possibility that such a monumental vote will impact positively on the poor state of net neutrality in the US, as US companies continue to expand into Europe, but we'll have to wait and see.

Blocking and throttling Internet traffic will become illegal in the European Union following a parliamentary vote on Thursday. Members of the European Parliament voted to close loopholes in a proposed law that some believed would have created a two-tier Internet. The so-called Telecoms Package originally described "specialized services," which would have allowed Internet service providers to charge more for more data-intensive content services such as voice over IP and streaming video.
