The Astrophysics Group of SRON and the Department of Astrophysics of the Radboud University have a vacancy for a 2 PhD students fm SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. The institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. SRON invites applications for two 4year PhD positions funded by ERC Consolidator Grant number 647208 to Dr. Peter Jonker. The PhD students will work in the group of Dr. Peter Jonker. The endgoal of the work is to determine whether intermediatemass black holes exist and if so what their mass distribution is. The employed tools include Gaia and followup optical and nearinfrared imaging and spectroscopy of tidal disruption events vacancy nr 1220 and compact stellar clusters vacancy nr 1221. Applicants can indicate that they want to be considered for both openings, if they wish so. The PhD students will both be based in Utrecht and, part of the time, in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Suburban LA students to switch schools after gas leak

A massive methane gas leak is sending 1,870 students in the Los Angeles suburb of Porter Ranch to alternate schools next semester, a transfer that will last until the end of the school year. The Los Angeles Unified School District announced this week that transfers will affect students from Castle Bay Lane Charter School and Porter Ranch Community School, "where teaching and learning have been disrupted by a natural gas leak."
