Philaes battery is running out: ESA will take some heroic risks to save the comet lander
2014-11-14 14:41:55| Extremetech
Sadly, even space agencies with budgets of tens of billions of dollars are not immune to the pathetically lacking longevity of batteries. The Philae lander has landed in an awkward position where its solar panels can't see the Sun, and thus its battery reserves are quickly running down. The European Space Agency will now try a series of heroic measures to try and keep Philae alive, but there's the regretful possibility that Friday night -- tonight -- will be the last time we hear from the probe.

Philae sends first photos from the surface of a comet, after almost failing to land (updated)
2014-11-13 17:03:35| Extremetech
The European Space Agency's Philae, which made history yesterday by landing on a 2-mile-wide comet some 300 million miles away, has sent back its first photo from the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The ESA has also released some more details about Philae's final descent and first few hours on the comet's surface, and they sound more like an exciting sequence from a sci-fi film than reality. Read on, for the current state of events -- and some beautiful photos, of course.

Rosetta Plants 1st Human Kiss on a Comet
2014-11-13 01:11:49| TechNewsWorld
The ESA's Rosetta mission on Wednesday achieved a first for humankind by successfully landing its Philae probe on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Now, the lander's fate hangs in the balance following a tense descent and the apparent failure of several key anchoring systems. "We are extremely relieved to be safely on the surface of the comet," said Stephan Ulamec, Philae Lander Manager.
