Were about to land on a comet for the very first time: Heres how well do it
2014-11-11 14:57:44| Extremetech
Early tomorrow morning, November 12, the European Space Agency will attempt to land on comet 67P. The Rosetta spacecraft, which has spent the last 10 years chasing down comet 67P, will release its Philae lander -- and, if everything goes to plan, it will touch down on the comet about seven hours later. It's an exceedingly complex maneuver, but if it's successful it will be the first time that humankind has ever landed on a comet, which would tell us a lot about the formation of the Solar System and maybe the genesis of life itself.
Humanity sniffs its first comet: Sadly, it stinks of rotten eggs, cat pee, and stale beer

It turns out that comet 67P, the comet that is currently being stalked by the ESA's Rosetta spacecraft, stinks. If you just so happened to be in whiff range of the comet, you would be treated to a fantastic "perfume" (the ESA's words, not mine) that smells like a combination of rotten eggs and horse urine, with a soupçon of stale alcohol and suffocating formaldehyde thrown in for good measure. In the words of the ESA, 'If you could smell the comet, you would probably wish that you hadnt.'
MAVEN captures first images of Mars atmosphere, braces for close comet flyby
2014-10-15 14:28:01| Extremetech
NASA's MAVEN spacecraft, which arrived at Mars last month, has sent back its first images of the Red Planet's atmosphere as it was battered by a large solar storm. These images are the first of their kind, providing us with information about Mars' ozone layer, and the tenuous oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen coronas at the edge of Mars' atmosphere. These coronas can tell us what the conditions on Mars might've been like over the last four billion years, detailing how the planet went from being warm and wet (and perfectly suited to harboring life), to the cold, dry, dusty sphere that it is today.

Europes Rosetta becomes the first spacecraft to orbit a real, live comet
2014-08-06 14:09:07| Extremetech
Europe's Rosetta, after a Hollywood-style chase that lasted more than 10 years and spanned a distance of 4 billion miles, has become the first ever spacecraft to orbit a comet. The ESA's Rosetta probe will now orbit the comet -- dubbed 67P or unofficially the rubber duck -- for a few months, in preparation for an even more exciting event later in the year: In November, Rosetta will deploy Philae, the first ever spacecraft to attempt a landing on a comet.
