The Christchurch-based company expects operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation in the year ending June 30, 2015, to be above the $58.7 million it reported in the 2014 year, chief executive Mark Dewdney says in a statement, affirming guidance given at its October annual meeting. Earlier this month, Fonterra cut its forecast farmgate milk price for the 2014/15 season by 60c per kilogram of milk solids to $4.70/kgMS, after global dairy prices halved since the start of the year.

The head of Japan's auto lobby on Thursday said a "sense of crisis" hung over the industry, with unexpectedly weak domestic sales revealing the failure of government stimulus policies and currency turmoil hitting key export markets. Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Chairman Fumihiko Ike said an April sales tax hike was only partly to blame for the domestic sales weakness, citing the government's failure to boost consumption.
