We are looking for a Mechanisms Engineer to be based at Airbus Defence Space Limited in Stevenage. As a Mechanisms Engineer your role will involve the detailed design, development and verification of high reliability, complex space mechanisms with a focus on motor development for both telecoms spacecraft and science missions. You will join a team of 12 highly experienced engineers who are all knowledgeable and passionate about space mechanisms. As a Mechanisms Engineer you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of motor development projects, current and future, working alongside different department experts from whom you will gain engineering knowledge in a diverse technical environment including thermal, stress, materials, environmental testing and quality, while also gaining a comprehensive working knowledge of complex space mechanisms and tribology. The successful candidate will be subject to security clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs. The role will involve some UK and European travel for business and as such you must be willing to travel accordingly. Understanding and working to a detailed technical specification Perform mechanisms and motor related design, analyses and tradeoffs Collaborating with specialist analytical departments and test departments stress, thermal, radiation, electrical, manufacturing, test, etc. to ensure the final analyses and test process satisfies stringent philosophies Preparation of reports for management, project and department Carry out tradeoffs and preliminary concept designs for early phase science studies Develop and maintain excellent customer working relationships including ESA, internal Airbus departments and the end customer Assist in preparation of technical elements for bids and proposals Support other Airbus Defence and Space departments on studies Contribute to work packages to ensure tasksactivities are completed on time, on cost and on quality Support the project responsible engineer during development, qualification and acceptance verification and validation Work closely with the project manager to ensure schedule and budgets are closely adhered to This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Companys success, reputation and sustainable growth. Familiar with the basic motor equations and ohms law and their application to simple motor driven systems Familiar with the specification and operation of stepper motor permanent magnet, hybrid powered and unpowered static torque profiles and their relevance for intermittently powered systems An understanding of the different methods of driving stepper motors Unipolar, Bipolar, ministep, etc. Familiar with the specification, operation and understanding of the speed torque profile of DC brushed motors Familiar with open loop drive methods for DC motors Knowledge of small gearboxes designed to be directly driven by motors such as mentioned above, in particular what elements contribute to efficiency and how to demonstrate margins in a motor gearbox assembly Construction and performance of motors and gearboxes as to be able to influence or make decisions on detail design lements, noting that these items will likely be designed and manufactured by specialist external manufacturers Airbus is committed to achieving workforce diversity and creating an inclusive working environment. Specific Tasks The core tasks of the Mechanical Facilities Engineer will consist in the following activities Providing active assistance to the EFM Mechanical Engineer in charge of the mechanical installations under the responsibility of the EFM division Controlling, monitoring and reviewing notably by means of key performance indicators the execution of preventive and corrective maintenance activities carried out by the onsite maintenance contractor or by subcontracted third party companies on the technical installations Reviewing, coordinating and monitoring all activities related to the construction, renovation, or modification of the technical infrastructure installations these activities are of a various nature adhoc requests for works, refurbishments, new projects or investments Monitoring and controlling the compliance with the applicable norms and legislations of all the works carried out by the onsite maintenance contractor or other third party companies on the technical installations Preparing work descriptions, technical specifications, or any other technical documents necessary for the coordination of small to large size projects related to technical installations Providing active assistance on multidisciplinary projects where worksactivities on the technical installations are involved Providing active assistance for the preparation, organisation, review and validation of work acceptance tests after construction, renovation,modification or maintenance of the technical installations Implementation and maintenance of service and quality assurance procedures Providing active assistance for studies about the operational condition, the performance, the upgrade and improvement of the technical installations and preparing corresponding improvement plans Liaising, closely cooperating and maintaining a sound working relationship with colleagues within the section, in or outside the department, and with the site maintenance contractor. Requirements At least a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or in Facilities Management Engineering At least a 5year experience in building infrastructure and Facilities Management, with Mechanical or Building System Engineering as an area of expertise A proven capability in the above areas of responsibility and technical building systems Good knowledge of the applicable norms and legislation Sound analytical skills be able to analyse any situation, issue or installation and create a clear and detailed technical report for root cause analysis, improvement or repair Good skills in the MS Office software package Word, Excel, Power Point, Project, Visio It would be an asset if applicants also have expertise in building electrical low voltage systems notably for the controlling and operation of the building automation systems, distribution boards and switchgears, communication lines, telephone and data networks, lightning protection, fire detection and evacuation system, access control and alarm systems Moreover applicants should be able to work autonomously and be eager to learn and acquire further knowledge in building systems engineering Required languages English, both written and orally knowledge of Dutch language is an asset.

The candidate will handle the following tasks Mechanisms support to all ESA project directorates with respect to the implementation of space mechanism technologies in current and future missions, including configuration assessments and mission performance evaluation Establishment of Statement of Work and Preliminary Requirement Specifications for Mechanism Systems, Individual Mechanisms or Mechanism components dedicated to Technology and Research Development. Perform and support in the role of Mechanism engineer, System Level Mission Definition studies and system conceptual design activities in support of the ESA long termfuture mission plans. Support investigations of mechanisms being out of performance, including malfunctions and contingency scenarios. Support and contribute to the establishment and maintenance of the Space Mechanisms ECSS Engineering Standards. Generation and setup of appropriate space mechanisms analysis and simulation models using analysis tools based on technical documentation of space mechanisms. Back up and archiving of analysis models for later retrieval. We are looking for a candidate who has the following characteristics. A Masters degree or equivalent in mechanical or aeronautical engineering. Relevant experience within the field of mechanism design, analysis, verification and testing. Excellent knowledge in space system engineering, specializing in mechanisms, knowledge of the Space Mechanism ECSS, standard EST3301CRev.1 Mechanisms and its application to the design and verification of mechanisms, together with a good knowledge of space mechanism testing and verification methodologies and techniques and a good knowledge of related mechanisms numerical analysis tools such as Adams, VirtualLab Motion, SIMPACK, MatlabSimulink, Maxwell, Flux etc. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work effectively, autonomously and cooperatively in a diverse and international team environment, defining and implementing solutions in line with team and individual objectives, as well as project deadlines. Other requirements Excellent interpersonal skills are needed, together with a high degree of organizational and communication abilities, and comfortable with working in a diverse and multinational team environment. Preference will be given to candidates eligible for an EU or national personal security clearance at the level of CONFIDENTIAL or above
