Activity field The role provides analysis and assessment of impacts of Space environment, both external and selfgenerated, on Satellite design. Analysis and assessment of impacts due to satellite reentry on the Earth at the end of operational lifetime. Academic professional preparation Masters Degree in Pure and Applied Mathematics or Masters degree in Physics and II level Master in Space Science and Technology. Knowledge of software for numerical computation and dynamic simulation eg. Matlab, Simulink, etc.. Knowledge of programming languages eg. C, Python, Java, etc... Activity description Satellite system engineering activity aimed to evaluate the effects of space environment to specify the requirements for design of satellite, and to specify requirement for satellite appendages e.g. solar array, antennas, etc.. The considered space environment is both the natural environment radiation, micrometeorids, orbital debris and the environment selfgenerated by satellite itself as the plume impingement due to chemical and electrical propulsion. In this context is part of the activity the development and finalization of in house software tool for evaluation of plume impingement effects both for chemical and electrical propulsion, and their validation through comparison of results with benchmark. Additional system engineering activity is the evaluation of the impacts generated by uncontrolled reentry in the Earth atmosphere of satellite at the end of its operational lifetime, with implementation of best practices for use of available simulation tools. This activity is finalized to obtain a mitigation of debris in orbit, through the driving of satellite design tradeoff to a debris mitigation policy. It is requested the attitude to learn new tools for Reentry analyses through personal theoretical study and on the job training, in case of specific requirements from customers It is requested the attitude to follow the entire design chain, from acquisition and understanding of requirements, provided by customer, to accomplishment of the design and its final verification before launch.

Overview General tasks related to the role are Support spacecraft and launcher configuration studies for Agency projects. Perform stability analysis leading to the determination of buckling loads and deformations. Where necessary the post buckling behaviour shall be addressed, adequate nonlinear approaches used, and where relevant specific solution sequences shall be developed. Evaluate critically the results, and issue relevant documentation covering all analysis steps. Support the generation and setup of mathematical models for structural thermoelastic stability problems for Agency funded projects, taking into account specific requirements attached to this type of analysis. Perform the interpolation of the temperature maps as resulting from thermal analysis for their employment in finite element structural analysis. Perform thermoelastic analysis leading to the determination of loads and deformations, evaluate the outcome in terms of margins of safety and stability budgets, evaluate critically the results and issue relevant documentation covering all analysis steps. Where necessary nonlinear approaches shall be considered and specific solution sequences shall be developed. Evaluate critically the results and the loads and issue relevant documentation. Support the preparation and execution of mechanical tests modal survey, sine, random, acoustics, microvibration, shock, etc for spacecraft launchers of Agency projects by performing andor reviewing analytical predictions and procedures. Perform modal identification of the test data, evaluate critically the results and make usage of these results for updating structural finite element models. Perform assessments of shock response data. Take into account the specific objectives of such analyses and where necessary nonlinear analyses shall be performed and specific solution sequences shall be developed. Issue relevant documentation covering all analysis steps. Where applicable produce advanced reduced dynamic mathematical models. Specific qualification requirements University degree MSc. in Aerospace or Mechanical engineering. 5 to 10 years experience in the space industry on the mechanical design, development and verification of space segment hardware. Relevant experience within the field of spacecraft and launcher structures design, analysis, verification and testing. Good knowledge in space system engineering, and space engineering standards ECSS. Knowledge and experience of structures numerical analysis tools such as Nastran, Patran, Abaqus, ESACRACK etc. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work effectively, autonomously and cooperatively in a diverse and international team environment, defining and implementing solutions in line with team and individual objectives, as well as project deadlines. Fluent in the English language spoken and written. Knowledge of another European language is an asset.
